শৈশবের শিক্ষায় বিকশিত হোক সাফল্যের সম্ভাবনা

কালের কণ্ঠ ১২ অক্টোবর, ২০২৩ ঢাকার আর দশটি সাধারণ পরিবারের মতোই মোহসিনার পরিবার। স্বামী-স্ত্রী দুজনই চাকরি করেন। তাঁদের সন্তানের বয়স মাত্র তিন বছর পার হলো, অথচ তাকে নিয়ে দুশ্চিন্তার অন্ত নেই মা-বাবার। কোন স্কুলে দেবেন, কোথায় কী শিখবে, স্কুল কেমন হবে, শিক্ষক কেমন হবেন ইত্যাদি চিন্তায় তাঁদের ঘুম নেই কয়েক দিন। সন্তানকে নিয়ে দুশ্চিন্তার এই চিত্র আজকাল যেন খুব স্বাভাবিক। বর্তমানে বেশির ভাগ পরিবারই শিশুর শিক্ষা নিয়ে দুশ্চিন্তায় ভোগে। একটি শিশুর শিক্ষাগ্রহণের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হয়ে যায় মায়ের গর্ভেই। আর এ কারণেই বেশির ভাগ ডাক্তার ওই সময় মায়েদের হাসিখুশি থাকতে বলেন, গান শুনতে বা অঙ্ক করাসহ সৃষ্টিশীল কাজের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত থাকার উপদেশ দেন। মায়ের ভালো লাগার বিষয়গুলো সন্তানের মধ্যেও প্রবাহিত হয়। তবে মায়ের গর্ভে থাকাকালে প্রচ্ছন্ন শিক্ষা বা জিন থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে প্রাপ্ত তথ্য একটি শিশুর পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশে যথেষ্ট নয়। শিশুটিকে পূর্ণ সম্ভাবনায় বিকশিত করতে হলে শৈশবেই পারিপার্শ্বিক শিক্ষা অর্জন করা জরুরি। সাধারণত শিশুদের মস্তিষ্কের ৮০ শতাংশই প্রথম তিন বছরের মধ্যে গঠিত হয়ে যায়। এরপর তিন থেকে পাঁচ বছরের মধ্যে ৯০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত মস্তিষ্ক গঠিত হয়। এই সময়টি শিশুদের শিক্ষা ও বিকাশের জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। বিশেষ করে বাকি জীবনের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়ের ভিত্তি এ সময়েই গড়ে ওঠে। তাই এ সময়ে কী শিখবে আর কিভাবে শিখবে তার ওপরই নির্ভর করে শিশুটির সাফল্যের সম্ভাবনা। আর এ কারণেই শিশুর পূর্ণ বিকাশ নিশ্চিত করতে বিশেষজ্ঞরা শৈশবের শুরুর (আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড) শিক্ষাকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে করেন। আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড শিক্ষা মূলত এমন একটি ব্যবস্থা, যেখানে শিশু খেলতে খেলতে জীবনের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়গুলো শিখে নেয়। এ সময় শিশুদের প্রশ্ন করার প্রবণতা বৃদ্ধি পায়, জগতের সব কিছু সম্পর্কে জানার কৌতূহল তৈরি হয়। আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড শিক্ষা শিশুদের এই কৌতূহল মেটায়, জগেক নিজের মতো করে দেখার জন্য প্রস্তুত করে তোলে। এই শিক্ষাব্যবস্থার মধ্য দিয়ে শিশুদের সামাজিক দক্ষতা গড়ে ওঠে, আত্মবিশ্বাসী হয়ে ওঠে তারা। শিশুরা এ সময় বিভিন্ন রকম খেলার মধ্য দিয়ে কিভাবে নতুন নতুন জিনিস শিখতে হয়, তা চর্চা করে। ফলে বাকিদের চেয়ে খুব দ্রুত তাদের বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক বিকাশ ঘটে। আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড শিক্ষা ব্যবস্থায় শিশুর শারীরিক ও মানসিক বিকাশও ত্বরান্বিত হয়। সব দিক থেকে শিশুদের পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশে খুব কার্যকর হওয়ায় বিশ্বব্যাপী আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড শিক্ষার জনপ্রিয়তা বাড়ছে। দেখা গেছে, যেসব শিশু আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড এডুকেশন গ্রহণ করেছে, তারা বাকি শিশুদের চেয়ে সামাজিকভাবে বেশি দক্ষ হয়ে উঠেছে। এই প্রগ্রামে শিশুরা নতুন বা অপরিচিত কারো সঙ্গে কিভাবে কথা বলবে ও মিশবে, তা শিখছে। দলগতভাবে যে সমস্যাগুলোর সমাধান করা প্রয়োজন, তা সবার সঙ্গে একসঙ্গে খুঁজে বের করছে। যেকোনো পরিবেশ ও পরিস্থিতির সঙ্গে মানিয়ে নেওয়ার সঙ্গে বেশ ছোটবেলা থেকেই পরিচিত হচ্ছে। আর এভাবেই তারা বাকি শিশুদের চেয়ে সামাজিকভাবে দক্ষ হয়ে উঠছে। এই সামাজিক দক্ষতা তাদের বাকি জীবনের ওপর ইতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলছে। এরপর আসে শারীরিক ও মানসিক দক্ষতার বিষয়টি। সমস্যার সমাধান ও সামাজিক দক্ষতা গড়ে ওঠার সঙ্গে মানসিক দক্ষতার কিছুটা সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। সমস্যা সমাধান করার মধ্য দিয়ে শিশুরা আত্মবিশ্বাসী হয়ে ওঠে। নতুন পরিবেশ বা পরিস্থিতি তাদের খুব বেশি প্রভাবিত করতে পারে না, বরং সামাজিক দক্ষতায় বাকিদের চেয়ে এগিয়ে থাকার কারণে তারা খুব দ্রুত নতুন সম্পর্ক তৈরি করতে পারে। শিশুর পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশে স্কুল বা শিক্ষকের পাশাপাশি পরিবারের ভূমিকাও অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। শিশুর শিক্ষার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত তিনটি পক্ষ রয়েছে। একদিকে রয়েছে শিক্ষার্থী নিজে, অন্যদিকে রয়েছে ওই শিক্ষার্থীর পরিবার; আরেক দিকে রয়েছে তার স্কুল বা শিক্ষক। এই তিন পক্ষের সমন্বয়ে গড়ে ওঠে শিশুর বিকাশের পথ। শিশুর শিক্ষার প্রথম হাতেখড়ি হয় তার পরিবারেই। শিশুর যেকোনো অর্জনই পরিবারের সহায়তায় অভ্যাসে পরিণত হয়। আর একজন শিক্ষকের প্রধান কাজ হচ্ছে ওই শিশুটির কোথায় আগ্রহ রয়েছে, ভবিষ্যতে সে কোন ক্ষেত্রে ভালো করবে, তা আগে থেকে বের করতে পারা। পাশাপাশি শিক্ষার্থীর মেধা ও আগ্রহের ওপর ভিত্তি করে তাকে ওইদিকে পরিচালিত করা। পরিবার ও শিক্ষকের সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টার মাধ্যমেই শিক্ষার্থীর দক্ষতা সম্পূর্ণ বিকশিত হওয়ার সুযোগ পায়। শিক্ষার্থীদের আত্মবিশ্বাসী, দায়িত্বশীল, সংবেদনশীল ও উদ্ভাবনী করে তুলতে এই সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টার কোনো বিকল্প নেই। আর্লি চাইল্ডহুড এডুকেশনের উদ্দেশ্যই হচ্ছে মেধা ও দক্ষতা বিকশিত করার মধ্য দিয়ে শিশুদের দায়িত্বশীল, সংবেদনশীল ও আত্মবিশ্বাসী করে গড়ে তোলা। দেখা যায়, এই প্রগ্রামে শিশুরা নিজের কাজ নিজে করার অনুশীলন করছে। যেমন বলা যায়, তারা নিজের খাবার নিজে খাওয়ার চেষ্টা করছে বা নিজেই নিজের জুতা পরার চেষ্টা করছে। আর এতে খুব ছোটবেলায়ই তারা নিজের দায়িত্ব নিজেরা নেওয়া শিখছে। আবার দেখা যায়, তারা বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে ভাগাভাগি করে খাবার খাচ্ছে। আর এর মধ্য দিয়ে গড়ে উঠছে পারস্পরিক সহযোগিতা আর সহমর্মিতা। খেলতে খেলতে পড়ছে, নতুন নতুন বিষয় শিখছে শিশুরা, যা তাদের সংবেদনশীল ও উদ্ভাবনী হয়ে গড়ে উঠতে ভূমিকা রাখছে। অনাগত দিনে শিশুর বিকশিত হওয়ার ভিত্তি গড়ে ওঠে শৈশবেই। তাই শিক্ষাজীবনের শুরুতেই শিশুর যথার্থ পরিবেশে শিক্ষা দেওয়ার বিষয়টি আমাদের গুরুত্বসহ উপলব্ধি করতে হবে। ছোটবেলায়ই সন্তানকে যথার্থ শিক্ষার সঙ্গে পরিচিত করানো গেলে মোহসিনার মতো অনেকেই নিশ্চিন্ত হতে পারবেন।  লেখক : হেড অব জুনিয়র স্কুল, গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল Source: শৈশবের শিক্ষায় বিকশিত হোক সাফল্যের সম্ভাবনা (kalerkantho.com)

Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, and Habits – the pillars of School of Life

by The Daily Star | Rising Stars on 28 September 2023 In conversation with Ramesh Mudgal, principal of Glenrich International School Satarkul Glenrich International School Satarkul (GIS), located in Dhaka’s Satarkul area, is an educational institution that operates with the motto of “School of Life”. Their campus is a clear testament to those words, rich with lush greenery and state of the art facilities alike. I sat down with the principal of GIS, Ramesh Mudgal, to discuss the philosophy behind the words “School of Life”, and how GIS is implementing these ideas to produce citizens for a brighter future. Tell us a bit about yourself.Ramesh Mudgal: I am a postgraduate in History and Education. I started my career in 1996 as a teacher in Kalaburagi, India. After that, I’ve taught in Thailand, Singapore, and the UAE as well. Since October, 2022, I’ve been with GIS. The best practices I’ve learned from working in different parts of the world have helped me in setting up GIS as a torchbearer of change as a 21st century school.  Can you explain to our readers the concept of “School of Life”? RM: This concept focuses on the fact that education is more than just books and knowledge. Education is actually the development of the whole personality. Education has to prepare a student for life. In my experience, I have seen smart students who have excelled in their academics who did not have great interpersonal skills, who were not receptive to feedback. When the time came for them to enter the job market, they could not sustain a career for long. That is because despite being ahead academically, they did not have the skills required to become successful in life. Our “School of Life” concept is that academics is the bare minimum, what more can we give students? Identifying the potential of the student, helping them realise their strengths and weaknesses, understanding the changing nature of the world, the skill sets and attitudes that will be necessary once they become job seekers or job providers in the future – this is what we provide. According to us, the School of Life concept is KASH: Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, and Habits. If these things are in place, they will be happy no matter what walk of life they are in. It is clear from the facilities present on the campus of GIS that the students’ physical health is of utmost importance to the school. Besides that, what is GIS doing to ensure that the mental health of its students are protected? RM: Self-worth is an important aspect. Everyone should feel like they are important. We treat every student with respect and make them believe that they are important. Our effort is to identify what the child is good at, take that particular thing and help the child get better at it. At the same time, we encourage them to try other things. If we make them focus on one thing and ignore the things they are good at, they will get demotivated. It is important for our teachers to express care and concern towards students. We are also planning to introduce a relaxation session for our students in the mornings, using the technology available in the classrooms. The world is constantly changing, and the nature of education is changing with it, as well as the expectations from an educational institution. As a school, what is GIS doing to prepare their students for this changing world? RM: To ensure that students are in tune with the changing nature of the world, we are not preparing them for today’s jobs. We have to prepare our students for jobs and activities that are going to be required 15 years down the line. We don’t know exactly what will happen in the future, but looking at today’s world, we can make a fair guess. For example, technology is going to be very strong, even now it is strong but over time it will get stronger and stronger. Manual jobs will be available in lesser quantities, but intellectual jobs will become important. Skills like problem solving, social empathy, values, creativity, these are the skills that will become more significant. Our curriculum is configured keeping all these things in mind. Robotics is integrated in our curriculum until grade 8, it is not optional. Our children are preparing for a world that is going to be a lot more different than the world we occupy now. A proper campus is important in the holistic growth of a child. Can you talk about some features of the GIS campus that you specifically want to mention? RM: A lot of thought has gone into the design of this campus. Some of the unique things about this campus are – the technology that is incorporated into every classroom with WiFi and touchpanels, then there is the huge library, we have a robotics lab, a mathematics lab. We have a skating rink in our school as well, two swimming pools, a phenomenal auditorium, and a rooftop basketball court that can be used for different sports. Laboratories, classrooms, music rooms, sports fields, all the infrastructure in our school is fantastic. Why is learning languages important in the lives of modern students and how is GIS teaching them? RM: We understand that language skills are crucial for every child. Every child has to learn their mother tongue, so Bangla is taught to all Bangladeshi nationals in the school and even expatriate students are encouraged to learn it. But the medium of instruction and communication in this school is English. In addition to that, we understand that the world requires individuals to be experts in one other international language. So, we are offering French as a language in our school. Everybody learns it, and this is being done in collaboration with Alliance Française de Dhaka. GIS welcomes 60 new ‘changemakers’.

The orientation was headed by Ramesh Mudgal, principal of Glenrich International School Satarkul, who welcomed all the new teachers along with his team. Inspired by the theme of ‘School of Life’, GIS calls their teachers ’change makers’ as they will be helping the future generation to learn, grow, solve social problems, and take creative actions, said a press release. The orientation session started with national anthem, followed by speeches from principal Mudgal and Kumkum Habiba Jahan, head of junior school, Glenrich International School Satarkul and Shaharia Sultana Ria, head of human resources, STS Capital Ltd. Local folk bands and artists performed during the event. After lunch the teachers were given customised gifts, ID cards, laptops, handbooks and many other resources. The press release further said, empowered by the modern concepts of curriculum entrenched in robotics, hands-on learning at the math lab, enquiry, project-based learning and excellent sporting infrastructure, GIS provides an unparalleled platform for 21st century learners. It was launched through a campus inauguration ribbon-cutting ceremony, to promote the idea of the “School of Life” and prepare the learners for the future world. The chief guest of the ceremony was Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni. The guest of honor was Commerce Minister Mr Tipu Munshi and the special guest was Deputy Education Minister Mohibul  Hasan Chowdhury. The government is trying to bring about significant changes in the education landscape. by Jamuna Tv on 07 April 2023 ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারণাকে উৎসাহিত করতে এবং ভবিষ্যতের জন্য শিক্ষার্থীদের প্রস্তুত করতে দেশে ‘গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল’ (জিআইএস) চালু করলো এসটিএস গ্রুপ। বৃহস্পতিবার (৬ এপ্রিল) নিজেদের নতুন প্রিমিয়াম কেমব্রিজ কারিকুলামের এ স্কুল উদ্বোধন করে এসটিএস গ্রুপ। উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে শিক্ষামন্ত্রী ডা. দীপু মনি, বলেন, গত এক দশকে শিক্ষার সুযোগ সম্প্রসারণের ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশ উল্লেখযোগ্য অগ্রগতি অর্জন করেছে। সরকার শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে পরিবর্তন আনতে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। ১৯৯৭ সালে বাংলাদেশে যাত্রা শুরু করে এসটিএস গ্রুপ। যাত্রা শুরুর পর থেকে বিভিন্ন উদ্ভাবনী পদ্ধতি গ্রহণের মাধ্যমে তারা দেশে আন্তর্জাতিক মানসম্পন্ন শিক্ষা প্রদানের প্রচেষ্টা অব্যাহত রেখেছে। আর এ লক্ষ্যপূরণে তাদের আইএসডি এবং ডিপিএস রয়েছে। ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারণা নিয়ে গ্লেনরিচ নামে গ্রুপটি আরেকটি বিশ্বমানের শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান উদ্বোধন করেছে। তিনি আরও বলেন, আমার বিশ্বাস স্কুলটি শিক্ষাদান পদ্ধতিতে বাংলাদেশের সংস্কৃতি ও বিশ্বাসকে যুক্ত করবে এবং শিক্ষার্থীদের ভবিষ্যতের জন্য প্রস্তুত করে তুলতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখবে। অনুষ্ঠানে বাণিজ্যমন্ত্রী টিপু মুনশি বলেন, গ্লেনরিচের চমৎকার ক্যাম্পাস দেখতে পেরে এবং স্কুলটি যে ধারণা নিয়ে কাজ করবে তা জানতে পেরে আমরা আনন্দিত। শিক্ষাখাতসহ বাংলাদেশ বিভিন্ন খাতে ধারাবাহিকভাবে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে। আমার আন্তরিক প্রত্যাশা প্রবৃদ্ধির এ ধারা অব্যাহত থাকবে। এসটিএস গ্রুপের চেয়ারম্যান বব কুন্দানমাল বলেন, আমরা বাংলাদেশের ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের জন্য সর্বোচ্চ মানসম্পন্ন শিক্ষা প্রদানে ধারাবাহিকভাবে বিনিয়োগ করতে প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ। আমাদের লক্ষ্য বাংলাদেশের তরুণদের বৈশ্বিকভাবে প্রতিযোগিতামূলক অবস্থার সমপর্যায়ে নিয়ে আসার জন্য তাদের প্রস্তুত করে তোলা। আর সে লক্ষ্যেই, আমরা ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারণা ও উন্নত পাঠ্যক্রম নিয়ে এসেছি, যা তরুণদের ভবিষ্যতের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় দক্ষতা অর্জনে ভূমিকা রাখবে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলস সার্ভিসেসের (আইএসএস) পরিচালক স্টিভ প্লিসিনস্কি বলেন, গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলের যাত্রা শুরু করা নিয়ে আমরা অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত। স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থীদের যেনো সকল পর্যায়ে সর্বোচ্চ মানসম্পন্ন শিক্ষা প্রদান করা হয়, তা নিশ্চিতে আইএসএস স্কুলের ব্যবস্থাপনা কর্তৃপক্ষের সাথে ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে কাজ করবে। অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত ভারপ্রাপ্ত ব্রিটিশ হাই কমিশনার ম্যাট ক্যানেল বলেন, এসটিএস গ্রুপ প্রিমিয়াম কেমব্রিজ কারিকুলাম স্কুল উদ্বোধন করেছে। এটা অত্যন্ত আনন্দের। এসটিএস গ্রুপের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে ভবিষ্যতে বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্য স্থানে গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল চালু করার। এজন্য আমি তাদের সাধুবাদ জানাই। এছাড়া অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন শিক্ষা উপমন্ত্রী মহিবুল হাসান চৌধুরী, এমপি, জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য ড. মো. মশিউর রহমান। আরও উপস্থিত ছিলেন এসটিএস গ্রুপের প্রধান নির্বাহী মানস সিং এবং গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলের অধ্যক্ষ রমেশ মুগডাল। অনুষ্ঠানে অন্যান্য বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিবর্গ ও এসটিএস গ্রুপের সদস্যরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। উল্লেখ্য, ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারনা নিয়ে কাজ করবে গ্লেনরিচ স্কুল, যেখানে শিক্ষার্থীরা শিক্ষামূলক বিষয়গুলো সম্পর্কে শিক্ষালাভ করবে এবং স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যদায়ক ও উপযুক্ত পরিবেশে সৃজনশীল বিকাশে পাঠ গ্রহণ করবে। শিক্ষার্থীদের পাঠ্যক্রমে আলিয়ঁস ফ্রঁসেজের সহযোগিতায় ফ্রেঞ্চ ভাষার কোর্স থাকবে এবং স্টেমরোবো রোবোটিকস শেখাবে। স্কুলের ম্যাথ ল্যাবের মাধ্যমে ম্যাথ বাডির সুবিধা প্রদান করা হবে এবং অ্যাসোসিয়েটেড বোর্ড অব রয়্যাল স্কুলস অব মিউজিক সঙ্গীতের পাঠ দান করবে। Source: ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারণা নিয়ে গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল চালু করলো এসটিএস গ্রুপ ‘স্কুল অব লাইফ’ ধারণা নিয়ে গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল চালু করলো এসটিএস গ্রুপ (jamuna.tv)
