সময়ের সঙ্গে বদলে যাচ্ছে প্রজন্ম ও শিক্ষার ধরন

আমরা প্রতিনিয়ত পরিবর্তনের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছি। সময় বদলে যাচ্ছে, নতুন নতুন চিন্তার ক্ষেত্র তৈরি হচ্ছে। আমাদের জীবনযাপনকেও প্রভাবিত করছে সেসব ভাবনা। এ নিয়ে অনেকের আক্ষেপেরও শেষ নেই—যুগ পাল্টে গেছে, আমাদের সময়ে এমনটা ছিল না! আসলে তা-ই, সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে যেন বদলে যাচ্ছে সব কিছু! পরিবর্তিত সময় ও বাস্তবতার প্রভাব খুব স্বাভাবিকভাবেই প্রজন্মের ওপর প্রভাব ফেলে, আর এর ওপর ভিত্তি করেই গড়ে ওঠে তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা, সামাজিক মূল্যবোধ ও আচরণের ধরন। মানুষের ইতিহাসে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য ঘটনা; বিশ্বের প্রায় সব জায়গাতেই এই যুদ্ধের ব্যাপক প্রভাব লক্ষ করা গেছে। বিশেষ করে, পর পর দুটি বিশ্বযুদ্ধ এবং এর মধ্যবর্তী সময়ের অর্থনৈতিক মন্দার প্রভাব তখনকার বিশ্বের বেশির ভাগ মানুষের ওপর সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিকভাবে প্রভাব বিস্তার করেছে। ফলে বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর তখনকার প্রজন্মের অভিজ্ঞতা যেন আরো প্রবলভাবে পরিবর্তিত হতে থাকে। বিশ্বের বয়স্ক জনগোষ্ঠীর বেশির ভাগই এখন ‘বেবি বুমার্স’ (১৯৪৬ থেকে ১৯৬৪ সালের মধ্যে জন্ম) বা ‘জেনারেশন এক্স’-এর (১৯৬৫ থেকে ১৯৮০ সালের মধ্যে জন্ম) মানুষ। তাঁরা যুদ্ধের কঠিন বাস্তবতা আর মহামন্দার সময় পার করেছেন; আবার যুদ্ধ-পরবর্তী সমৃদ্ধি, অর্থনৈতিক প্রবৃদ্ধি ও পরিবর্তিত পারিবারিক মূল্যবোধের ভেতর দিয়ে গেছেন। এর পাশাপাশি অর্থনৈতিক ও রাজনৈতিক অনিশ্চয়তা এবং প্রযুক্তির বিকাশ তাঁদের একই সঙ্গে স্বাধীনচেতা ও সন্দেহপ্রবণ মানসিকতা গড়ে তোলার ক্ষেত্রে ভূমিকা পালন করেছে। তাঁরাই প্রথম দৈনন্দিন জীবনে প্রযুক্তির ব্যাপক ব্যবহারের অভিজ্ঞতা লাভ করেছেন। এরপর আশির দশকের শুরু থেকে নব্বইয়ের দশকের মাঝামাঝি পর্যন্ত ‘মিলেনিয়াল’ বা ‘জেনারেশন ওয়াই’ নামে পরিচিত। তাঁদের সময়ে ইন্টারনেটের উত্থান ঘটে; বিশ্বায়ন ও সারা বিশ্বে দ্রুত প্রযুক্তি ছড়িয়ে পড়ার বিষয়টি প্রত্যক্ষ করেন তাঁরা। এই প্রজন্মের মানুষদের একদিকে সামাজিক ন্যায়বিচার নিয়ে ভাবতে হয়, অন্যদিকে তাঁদের জীবন ও কর্মের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করে চলতে হয়। এদিকে ডিজিটাল যোগাযোগে অভ্যস্ত মানসিকতা তাঁদের অভিজ্ঞতাকে আকার দিতে সাহায্য করে। এরপর দেখা মেলে ‘জেনারেশন জি’ বা ‘জেন-জি’ প্রজন্মের (১৯৯৭ থেকে ২০১২ সালে জন্ম)। স্মার্টফোন, সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম, প্রযুক্তি ও তথ্য ব্যবহারের অবাধ সুযোগের মধ্য দিয়ে বেড়ে ওঠে এই প্রজন্ম। স্মার্টফোন, সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম, প্রযুক্তি ও তথ্য ব্যবহারের অবাধ সুযোগের মধ্য দিয়ে বেড়ে ওঠে এই প্রজন্ম।  ডিজিটাল  মাধ্যমের সাবলীল ব্যবহার তাঁদের ব্যক্তিত্ব গঠনে সহায়ক ভূমিকা রাখে। বলা চলে, এই প্রজন্ম ডিজিটাল জীবনযাত্রার ওপর ব্যাপকমাত্রায় নির্ভরশীল। তাদের নিয়মিত যোগাযোগ বা কারো সঙ্গে দেখা করা থেকে শুরু করে আড্ডা, বিনোদন এমনকি খেলাধুলা পর্যন্ত ডিজিটাল মাধ্যম ব্যবহার করে হচ্ছে। প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মে পরিবর্তিত হওয়া এই অভিজ্ঞতা, প্রযুক্তির রূপান্তর ও সহজলভ্যতার প্রভাব পড়েছে জীবনের সব জায়গায়। কাজের জায়গা, ভাষা, আচরণ, ব্যবহার, যোগাযোগ থেকে শুরু করে সামগ্রিক সংস্কৃতিতে এই প্রভাব লক্ষণীয়। এটা খুবই স্বাভাবিক যে এক প্রজন্মের অনেক অভিজ্ঞতাই পরের প্রজন্ম তাদের মতো করে বুঝে নিতে পারে না। আবার দেখা যাচ্ছে, হাতে থাকা স্মার্টফোনে সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম ব্যবহার করে পুরনো বন্ধুকে খুঁজে বের করার মতো নতুন প্রজন্মের অনেক অভিজ্ঞতাই পুরনোদের রপ্ত করতে হচ্ছে। প্রযুক্তির বিকাশের এই অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে তাঁরা নিজেদের বঞ্চিত করতে চাইছেন না। মূলত এই প্রবণতাই এক প্রজন্মের সঙ্গে আরেক প্রজন্মের আচরণগত পার্থক্য গড়ে দিয়েছে। জেন-জি যে প্রযুক্তিতে অভ্যস্ত বা তাদের কাছে যে আচরণ অত্যন্ত স্বাভাবিক, তা হয়তো বেবি বুমার্স, জেনারেশন এক্স এবং এমনকি মিলেনিয়ালদেরও শুরু থেকে শেখা লাগছে; শিখলেও জেন-জিদের মতো পারদর্শী হতে অনেক বেশি সময় লাগছে। দেখা যাচ্ছে, জেন-জিরা দৈনন্দিন জীবনেও অনেক বেশি প্রযুক্তিনির্ভর। পোশাক বা কোনো কিছু কেনাকাটা করা, দল বেঁধে রেস্তোরাঁয় খেতে যাওয়া, এমনকি যেকোনো ধরনের তথ্য বা সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করার ক্ষেত্রেও তারা সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমের ওপর নির্ভরশীল। অর্থাৎ, ফেসবুক, ইনস্টাগ্রাম বা ইউটিউবের মতো ডিজিটাল মাধ্যম তাদের সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ ও মানসিকতা গঠনের ওপর ব্যাপক প্রভাব বিস্তার করে। নিত্যনতুন রূপান্তরিত ও সহজলভ্য প্রযুক্তি জেন-জিদের মাঝে এমন কিছু আচরণ বা বৈশিষ্ট্য তৈরি করেছে, যা এর আগে অন্য কোনো প্রজন্মের মধ্যে দেখা যায়নি। প্রযুক্তির প্রতি তাদের অপরিসীম আগ্রহের কারণে ইতিবাচক ও নেতিবাচক দুই ধরনের প্রবণতাই লক্ষ করা যাচ্ছে। তারা প্রযুক্তিকে ব্যবহার করে যেকোনো জায়গা থেকে যেকোনো সময় পছন্দমাফিক তথ্য জেনে নিতে পারে, এটাকে ইতিবাচক প্রভাব বলা যায়। আবার এর ফোদের মনোযোগ ধরে রাখার সময়ের পরিমাণ কমে গেছে। এই প্রজন্মের মানুষের মধ্যে খুব সংক্ষেপে বা দ্রুত সব কিছু শিখে ফেলার প্রতি প্রবল আকর্ষণ রয়েছে। খুব স্বাভাবিকভাবেই, আমাদের সামগ্রিক শিক্ষাব্যবস্থাও প্রজন্মের এই রূপান্তরের প্রভাবের বাইরে পড়েনি। জেন-জি প্রজন্মের শেষের Published in: Kaler Kantho

How volunteering can make a difference in the lives of others

It would have been an otherwise missed opportunity to understand the value of volunteering, had I not come in touch with a group of children and see how they learn and apply their newfound knowledge.  Habiba, a young girl, showed her curiosity to know many things when she joined ten other children at an eight-month learning session in Dhaka last year.   “How do you manage your classes and teach here ma’am?” she asked me as I, serving as the president of our school’s community club, alongside Wasi Hussain, both seniors in grade 12, organised a project named “Forging Futures” through our school’s community club.  “I have a longing to learn more,” Habiba said prompting me to think that she would have had a chance of securing a better education in a better place. It felt like the more privileged students like us should help children like Habiba to pursue their dreams.  The journey of Forging Futures’ sessions began with the goal of sharing our knowledge and love for learning with children who had not been as fortunate in their educational journeys. Each and every one of them from ‘Families for Children’, an orphanage, had a story to tell and collective feelings to share with others.  During the tutoring sessions, we realised that most of them struggled with understanding basic concepts despite their enthusiasm. We then focused on creating a friendly environment so that they were encouraged to ask questions for clear understanding.   However, while we, a team of 16 volunteers, went there to equip them with academic knowledge, we came back with life lessons that we shall carry within ourselves throughout. On the last day of the project, all the children disappeared for a moment. They then returned with handmade cards for every one of us. They drew portraits and wrote notes in English even though they were still learning. We wondered how impactful a helping hand could be on someone’s life. We all can actually grow together.  This journey taught me the value of compassion. The lessons we, as a team, learned extended far beyond traditional academics, deepening a sense of responsibility towards the community. The volunteering experience not only offers a strong platform to adapt to a greater world but also teaches humility and cultivates empathy in young minds.   As we understand, working for the community also develops a lifelong commitment to giving back. Not just being successful alone, what is more important is being a socially responsible person. This sense of purpose and connection is something that textbooks cannot always teach. We may be the catalysts for a kinder, more inclusive world. DPS STS School Dhaka hosts graduation ceremony

DPS STS School Dhaka has recently hosted the graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 through a grand event at the DPS STS Senior School Auditorium. A total of 114 students graduated from the school in the 2023-2024 academic sessions, says a press release. The graduation ceremony of the class of 2024 was attended by the school’s principal Shivananda CS, vice principal Tarana Majid Ahmed, head of marketing and admissions Nabamita Momtaz, head of the upper-secondary section (Grades 9-12) Shegufta Hasan Khan, dean of academics for the upper-secondary section Sangeeta Deedwania Taunk, head of lower-secondary (Grades 5-8) Jesmin Sultana, dean of academics for the lower secondary Ilham Adnan Alam, and the head of the business studies department and grade 12 coordinator Afrin Khan, all the teachers of Grades 9-12 along with the DPS STS Senior School admin team members and several high officials from the STS Group. Additionally, all the parents of graduating students were present at the ceremony. The principal and vice principal then distributed certificates to all the graduating students together, followed by section-wise group photo sessions with the teachers. After a series of cultural performances and batch video screening, Afnan Hider, DPS STS valedictorian of the class of 2024, gave an inspiring speech dedicated to his fellow graduates and the school where they all spent over 12 years together. Regarding the graduation of the class of 2024, Shivananda CS said, “The graduation day is a momentous occasion where the students complete one journey and embark on another with all their hard work and achievements. DPS STS School Dhaka hosts World Scholars Cup 2024

The prestigious World Scholars Cup 2024 began earlier Thursday with DPS STS School Dhaka as its proud host. This two-day-long competition comes as a fun and unique opportunity for students across the country to flaunt their intellect and get a chance to compete at the Tournament of Champions at Yale. Welcoming shining minds of grades 5 to 12, this competition is all about having fun and earning medals, trophies, certificates, and more, says a press release. The participants are divided into two groups: Juniors (ages 10-13) and Seniors (ages 14 and above). Around 200 students from different schools across the country are participating in the competition.The World Scholars Cup, hosting participants from over 60 countries, is a prestigious international team academic competition that unites students from diverse cultures into discussions on contemporary issues and ideas. It is renowned for its challenging and engaging academic events, including Scholars Bowl, Collaborative Writing, Scholars Challenge and Team Debate. The next step of this cup, the global rounds, will be held in Baku, Kuala Lumpur, Stockholm, Seoul, Dalian, and Bangkok across different months of this year. These competitions enable students to demonstrate their prowess in a variety of subjects and to earn individual medals and team trophies.
