DPS STS School Dhaka hosts graduation ceremony

DPS STS School Dhaka has recently hosted the graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 through a grand event at the DPS STS Senior School Auditorium. A total of 114 students graduated from the school in the 2023-2024 academic sessions, says a press release. The graduation ceremony of the class of 2024 was attended by the school’s principal Shivananda CS, vice principal Tarana Majid Ahmed, head of marketing and admissions Nabamita Momtaz, head of the upper-secondary section (Grades 9-12) Shegufta Hasan Khan, dean of academics for the upper-secondary section Sangeeta Deedwania Taunk, head of lower-secondary (Grades 5-8) Jesmin Sultana, dean of academics for the lower secondary Ilham Adnan Alam, and the head of the business studies department and grade 12 coordinator Afrin Khan, all the teachers of Grades 9-12 along with the DPS STS Senior School admin team members and several high officials from the STS Group. Additionally, all the parents of graduating students were present at the ceremony. The principal and vice principal then distributed certificates to all the graduating students together, followed by section-wise group photo sessions with the teachers. After a series of cultural performances and batch video screening, Afnan Hider, DPS STS valedictorian of the class of 2024, gave an inspiring speech dedicated to his fellow graduates and the school where they all spent over 12 years together. Regarding the graduation of the class of 2024, Shivananda CS said, “The graduation day is a momentous occasion where the students complete one journey and embark on another with all their hard work and achievements. The prestigious World Scholars Cup 2024 began earlier Thursday with DPS STS School Dhaka as its proud host. This two-day-long competition comes as a fun and unique opportunity for students across the country to flaunt their intellect and get a chance to compete at the Tournament of Champions at Yale. Welcoming shining minds of grades 5 to 12, this competition is all about having fun and earning medals, trophies, certificates, and more, says a press release. The participants are divided into two groups: Juniors (ages 10-13) and Seniors (ages 14 and above). Around 200 students from different schools across the country are participating in the competition.The World Scholars Cup, hosting participants from over 60 countries, is a prestigious international team academic competition that unites students from diverse cultures into discussions on contemporary issues and ideas. It is renowned for its challenging and engaging academic events, including Scholars Bowl, Collaborative Writing, Scholars Challenge and Team Debate. The next step of this cup, the global rounds, will be held in Baku, Kuala Lumpur, Stockholm, Seoul, Dalian, and Bangkok across different months of this year. These competitions enable students to demonstrate their prowess in a variety of subjects and to earn individual medals and team trophies. শিক্ষার্থীদের পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশে মন্টেসরি পদ্ধতির ভূমিকা

শিশুরাই আমাদের আগামী, আর তাই তাদের জন্য সবচেয়ে যথার্থ শিক্ষাপদ্ধতি কী হতে পারে, তা নিয়ে সারাবিশ্বেই বিস্তর গবেষণা চলছে। এটা এখন সবাই স্বীকার করছেন যে, কেবল ক্লাসরুম বা প্রথাগত পড়াশোনা একজন শিশুর যথাযথ বিকাশের জন্য যথেষ্ট নয়। এর পাশাপাশি তাদের শারীরিক, মানসিক, সামাজিক ও আবেগীয় গুণাবলির পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশ নিশ্চিত করতে পাঠ্যক্রম বহির্ভূত নানা কার্যক্রমের প্রয়োজন রয়েছে। শিক্ষার্থীকে সুস্থ-সবল রাখা, মেধা ও যোগ্যতা ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে তাকে ভবিষ্যতের যেকোনো পরিস্থিতির জন্য প্রস্তুত করে তোলাই একটি যথার্থ শিক্ষাব্যবস্থার প্রধান উদ্দেশ্য।একজন শিক্ষার্থী সবসময়ই নানা ধরনের শিক্ষার ভেতর দিয়ে যায়। তবে জন্মগ্রহণের পর থেকে শুরু করে প্রথম কয়েকবছরের মধ্যেই তার মস্তিষ্ক সুগঠিত হয়। এসময় ওই শিশু যেকোনো শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করার জন্য পুরোপুরি প্রস্তুত থাকে। শিশুর জন্য অত্যন্ত জরুরি এই সময়টিকে তাই শিক্ষাবিদরা খুবই গুরুত্বের সাথে নিয়েছেন। শিশুর এই সময়ের শিক্ষা তার পরবর্তী জীবনের ভিত্তি হিসেবে কাজ করে। এই বিষয়গুলো বিবেচনা করে গত শতকের শুরুর দিকে বাস্তবতা-নির্ভর শিক্ষাব্যবস্থা নিয়ে আসেন ইতালিয় শিক্ষাবিদ মারিয়া মন্টেসরি। শিশুদের জন্য বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক ও কার্যকর শিক্ষাপদ্ধতি হিসেবে সারাবিশ্বে এই পদ্ধতিটি মন্টেসরি’র নামে জনপ্রিয় হয়। মন্টেসরি শিক্ষাপদ্ধতিতে বেশ কয়েকটি বিষয়ের ওপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়। প্রথমেই বিভিন্ন বয়সের শিশুদের নিয়ে একটি ক্লাস তৈরি করা হয়। এরপর এদের আগ্রহের বিষয়টি খেয়াল করে সে অনুযায়ী তাদের প্রতি মনোযোগ দেওয়া হয়। তারা যেন স্বাধীনভাবে নিজেদের আগ্রহের বিষয়টি চর্চা করতে পারে তা নিশ্চিত করা হয়। ফলে ওই শিশুর মাঝে একইসাথে ব্যক্তিসত্ত্বা ও সহমর্মিতা খুব সহজেই তৈরি করা যায়। ওই শিশুর আগ্রহ রয়েছে এমন বিষয়ে মনোযোগ দেওয়ার ফলে তার মাঝে হাতে-কলমে শিক্ষাগ্রহণের উদ্দীপনা বৃদ্ধি পায়। তাদের এমনভাবে প্রস্তুত করা হয় যেন তারা বিশ্বের যেকোনো ক্ষেত্র থেকে নিজের পছন্দের বিষয়টি নিজে থেকেই শিখে নিতে সক্ষম হয়। এখন বিশ্বের সব শিক্ষাপদ্ধতিই স্বীকার করে নিয়েছে যে শিশুদের পূর্ণাঙ্গ বিকাশের জন্য শরীর ও মন দু’টিতেই সমান মনোযোগ দেওয়া জরুরি। বিশেষত, শিক্ষার্থীদের শৈশবেই শারীরিক নানা কার্যক্রমের মধ্য দিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলে, তাদের মধ্যে সমন্বয় ও মোটর দক্ষতা (হাঁটা, চলা-ফেরা ইত্যাদি) বিকশিত হয়। এতে করে পরবর্তী শিক্ষাগ্রহণের পর্যায়গুলো তাদের জন্য সহজ হয়ে আসে। নানান ধরনের খেলাধুলার মধ্য দিয়ে তাদের মাঝে নেতৃত্ব, সহযোগিতা, সহানুভূতি, দলগতভাবে কোনো কাজ সম্পন্ন করার মতো সামাজিক ও আবেগীয় বুদ্ধিমত্তার বিকাশ ঘটে। আর শৈশবের এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শিক্ষাটি ওই শিক্ষার্থীর পরবর্তী সারা জীবনে বিভিন্নভাবে কাজে লাগে। শিক্ষার প্রতি শিশুদের আরও মনোযোগী করে তুলতে ইদানীং সাঁতার ও স্কেটিংয়ের প্রতি গুরুত্ব দিচ্ছে অনেক শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের আর্লি ইয়ারস প্রোগ্রাম। এ ধরনের শরীরচর্চা কেবল তাদের শরীরকেই সুস্থ রাখে না, একইসাথে তাদের বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক বিকাশেও সহায়তা করে। সাঁতার তাদের নিঃশ্বাসের ওপর নিয়ন্ত্রণ প্রতিষ্ঠা করে, অতিরিক্ত মেদ ঝরিয়ে সবল থাকতে সহায়তা করে। স্কেটিং তাদের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য, সমন্বয় ও খুঁটিনাটি বিষয়ের প্রতি মনোযোগী হতে সাহায্য করে। মূলত বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক মন্টেসরি শিক্ষাপদ্ধতির মাধ্যমে তাদের শিখানো হয় কীভাবে একটি বিষয় একাগ্রভাবে শিখতে হয়। ফলে, যেকোনো নতুন কিছু শিক্ষার্থীরা খুব সহজেই শিখে নিতে পারে। একজন শিক্ষার্থীকে শৈশবেই বিকশিত করে তোলার ক্ষেত্রে পরিবার ও শিক্ষকই প্রধান ভূমিকা পালন করে থাকেন। তবে, শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান বা ক্লাসরুমে মন্টেসরির মতো বাস্তবসম্মত শিক্ষাপদ্ধতি প্রয়োগ করার মাধ্যমে একজন শিক্ষার্থীকে আরও যথাযথভাবে সহায়তা করা সম্ভব। লেখক : হেড, প্রি-প্রাইমারি এবং গ্রেড ১ ও ২, গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল Published in: Bangladesh Pratidin

American journalist Flora Lewis once said, “Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things.” Lewis describes in a few words that learning foreign languages goes beyond the basic communication requirements and the learning of mere words. She sheds light onto the magical aspect of speaking in other languages where it shifts horizons, discovering a new version of life and opening perspectives into the same concept in a different way. It truly means in most places where you go, you are a “local” there. In today’s increasingly globalised world, having proficiency in multiple languages can open the world for you. This means gaining a wider range of musical experiences, having access to global business and work opportunities, understanding the various cultures of the world, and engaging with literature, films, and other art forms that may have been inaccessible before. Whether you are aiming for admission to top-tier universities, mastering different cultural expressions, seeking the best job opportunities, or simply wanting to expand your linguistic repertoire, learning a third language can always be rewarding. The language learning market was valued at $52.7 billion in 2022 and is forecasted to reach $337.2 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 20.8 percent. People, mostly the young, from all over the world are learning their preferred third language via in-person classes or online, from French, Spanish, and Mandarin to Arabic and German. According to market research, the global e-learning market is projected to reach $325 billion by 2025, with language learning being one of the fastest-growing segments. Young students are said to be some of the most eager candidates willing to learn a third language, be it to better understand the music of their foreign artists or to get a better chance at enrolling at top-ranked universities. Fluency in a third language can be a game-changer when it comes to seeking admission to prestigious universities in particular. Many top-ranked institutions value multilingual applicants, as they bring a unique perspective and the ability to navigate diverse academic and cultural environments. Similarly, in the job market, employers often seek candidates with language skills, as they can effectively communicate with clients, partners, and colleagues from around the world, giving them a competitive edge. নৃত্যের তালে যেভাবে সুস্থ থাকে মস্তিষ্ক

নাচ শব্দটি শুনলে অনেকেই মনে করেন এটি কেবল বিনোদনের কোনো উপায় বা অবসরে করার মতো কাজ; অথবা বড়জোর গান, বিতর্ক, অভিনয় বা খেলাধুলার মতো কোনো সহশিক্ষা কার্যক্রম (এক্সট্রা কারিকুলাম অ্যাক্টিভিটি)। অনেকে এটাও মনে করেন, শিশুর সাধারণ শিক্ষার্জনকে আকর্ষণীয় করে তোলা ছাড়া এসবের আর বিশেষ কোনো ভূমিকা নেই। আবার অনেকের ভাবনায় এটিও আসে যে, এতে শুধু সময় নষ্ট হচ্ছে; শিশুর শিক্ষা গ্রহণ ব্যাহত হচ্ছে। আসলেই কি তাই! নাচ বিষয়ে গবেষকরা একদমই ভিন্ন তথ্য দিচ্ছেন। তারা জানাচ্ছেন, নাচ মস্তিষ্কের সামগ্রিক বিকাশে অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে, যা শিশুর শিক্ষার্জন ও পরবর্তী জীবন গঠনে ইতিবাচক প্রভাব রাখে। কেবল প্রথাগত পড়াশোনা আর পরীক্ষার মাধ্যমেই শিশুর শিক্ষার্জন সম্ভব–এমন ধারণা থেকে আমাদের শিক্ষাব্যবস্থা বের হয়ে আসছে। শিশুর সামগ্রিক বিকাশ নিশ্চিত করতে এখন নাচ-গান, বিতর্ক বা খেলাধুলার মতো সহশিক্ষা কার্যক্রমকে আধুনিক শিক্ষাব্যবস্থায় অত্যন্ত গুরুত্ব দিয়ে দেখা হচ্ছে। বিশেষত সঠিকভাবে শিক্ষা অর্জন করা, শরীর ও মনের যথাযথ উন্নয়ন এবং ভবিষ্যতের জীবন গঠনে ইতিবাচক মানসিকতা গড়ে তুলতে নাচকে শিক্ষার অন্যতম জরুরি অনুষঙ্গ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হচ্ছে। আলবার্ট আইনস্টাইন কলেজ অব মেডিসিনের বিজ্ঞানীরা ২০০৩ সালে নিউ ইংল্যান্ড জার্নাল অব মেডিসিনে একটি সমীক্ষা প্রকাশ করেন। সেখানে বিশ্রামকালীন কার্যক্রম কীভাবে বয়স্ক মানুষের মাঝে ডিমেনশিয়ার (মানসিক বৈকল্য; স্মৃতি সংরক্ষণ, চিন্তাভাবনা করা বা সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার সক্ষমতা কমে যাওয়া) ঝুঁকি বাড়াতে ভূমিকা রাখে তার ফলাফল উঠে আসে। সাইক্লিং, গলফ, টেনিস বা সাঁতারের মতো ১১টি শারীরিক ব্যায়ামের ওপর পরিচালিত এ গবেষণায় দেখা যায়, বয়সকালে ডিমেনশিয়া প্রতিরোধে সবচেয়ে কার্যকর ভূমিকা রাখে নাচ। এতে আরও দেখা যায়, নাচের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত সামাজিক যোগাযোগ ও মানসিক প্রচেষ্টা ডিমেনশিয়ার ঝুঁকি কমিয়ে আনতে সক্ষম।যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নর্থ ডাকোটা রাজ্যের মিনোট স্টেট ইউনিভার্সিটির গবেষকরা একটি গবেষণা পরিচালনা করেন। সেখানে দেখা যায়, লাতিন-প্রভাবিত ‘জুম্বা’ নাচ দৃষ্টিশক্তি ও সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণে সক্ষমতা বাড়ানোসহ বেশ কিছু কগনিটিভ ও মানসিক বিকাশে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে। নাচ মানসিক অবসাদ কমাতে, সেরোটোনিন (মস্তিষ্ক ও শরীরের মধ্যে বার্তাবহনকারী হরমোন; যা ঘুম, হজম, ক্ষত সারানো, রক্ত জমাট বাঁধা, মুড নিয়ন্ত্রণের মতো আরও নানা শারীরিক কার্যক্রমে অবদান রাখে) নিঃসরণ বাড়াতে এবং মস্তিষ্কে নতুন সংযোগ (নিউরন) তৈরি করতে সহায়ক ভূমিকা রাখে। শিক্ষা গ্রহণ, চিন্তা, সৃজনশীলতা ও বুদ্ধিমত্তার মতো বিষয়গুলোতে মস্তিষ্ক ও শরীর একসঙ্গে কাজ করে। এ ক্ষেত্রে নাচ শরীরের কর্মক্ষমতা বাড়ানোর মাধ্যমে মস্তিষ্কের সামগ্রিক বিকাশকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যায়। নাচের বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপ ও মুদ্রা স্মরণশক্তি বাড়াতে সহায়তা করে, দ্বৈত বা দলীয় নাচে সামাজিক দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি পায়, সবার সামনে নাচ উপস্থাপনে আত্মবিশ্বাস বাড়ে। এ ছাড়া নাচের মাধ্যমে শরীর ভারসাম্য রক্ষা করতে শেখে, পেশি সুগঠিত ও শক্তিশালী হয়; নাচ অনুশীলনকারীরা মানসিকভাবে স্থির ও সৃজনশীল হয়; নিজেকে প্রকাশ করার মাধ্যমে তারা আবেগীয় দক্ষতার দ্রুত বিকাশ ঘটাতে পারে। যেসব শিক্ষার্থী নিয়মিত নাচ অনুশীলন করে তারা সময়ানুবর্তী ও নিয়মানুবর্তী হয়। ধারাবাহিক অনুশীলনের মাধ্যমে তাদের মধ্যে নিষ্ঠা, নেতৃত্বের গুণাবলি ও দ্রুত সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার সক্ষমতা তৈরি হয়। পরবর্তী সময়ে শিক্ষার্থীর ব্যক্তিত্ব বিকাশে এ বিষয়গুলো অত্যন্ত কার্যকরী হয়। শিশুর শরীর, মন ও মস্তিষ্কের বিকাশ শৈশবেই শুরু হয়। তাই, এ সময়েই তাদের বিজ্ঞান, গণিত বা ভাষার মতো সাধারণ শিক্ষার পাশাপাশি, নাচের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সহশিক্ষা কার্যক্রমের সঙ্গে পরিচিত করানো জরুরি। পুরোনো ধ্যান-ধারণা থেকে বের হয়ে এসে শিশুর শারীরিক, মানসিক, সামাজিক, আবেগীয় উন্নয়নসহ সামগ্রিক বিকাশে মনোযোগী হওয়ার এটাই যথার্থ সময়। লেখক: নৃত্য প্রশিক্ষক, গ্লেনরিচ ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল  Published in: Samakal

Nurturing creativity: The key to innovation and success

Very few things shape the human experience as deeply and persistently as creativity does. American educator, entrepreneur, and author Tina Seelig presented a ground-breaking concept in her book inGenius: A Crash Course on Creativity. She refers to it as the “Innovation Engine,” and it provides a useful collection of tools that anybody can use to significantly boost creativity and promote innovation. Creativity, she believes, is a renewable resource that we can tap into at any time. Hence, the creative process must begin in the early years of life. Creativity is the foundation for innovation. The goal of creative thinking is to combine what already exists in a way that hasn’t been done before, rather than creating something entirely new from scratch. While people often think of creativity as an event or as a natural skill that some people have and some do not, both creativity and non-creativity are mostly learned. Even though some people may just be more creative by nature, everyone can become more creative through training and practice. This is because creative problem-solving is ingrained in the human brain, and it may be enhanced and uncovered using tools and methods.  For instance, children who are encouraged to think creatively and are given the freedom to explore their ideas and interests are more likely to develop strong creative skills. But kids who hear negative feedback about their creativity or who face consequences for thinking beyond the box may eventually lose contact with their creative side. Parents and teachers need to implement unique strategies to nurture creativity in children. Providing children with open-ended play materials that have no one right way of being played with can spur the imagination and inspire creativity, like using plain paper instead of colouring books or solving a Rubik’s cube. Recognising biases around creativity and reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth can help children develop their creative abilities. Supplying children with advanced materials for drawing, building, and crafting, such as robotics kits, 3D printers, and art supplies, can enhance modern creativity skills. Consequently, spending time outdoors and engaging with the natural world can provide sensory-rich experiences that stimulate creativity in children. Yoga and exercises, storytelling sessions, and brainstorming and problem-solving sessions may help educators foster creativity and innovation in young students. This school of life learning concept revolves around how education can be fulfilling, effective, and healing, yet constructive and empowering. By incorporating this kind of learning, we can foster creativity in children and equip them with the tools they need to become innovative thinkers and problem-solvers. Certainly, some people are primed to be more creative than others. However, nearly every person is born with some level of creative skill, and the majority of our creative thinking abilities are trainable. When the creative process begins early, it can lead to life-long innovative practices. Creativity provides the raw material for innovation, while innovation transforms creative ideas into real-world solutions.
